AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing Basic Stuff by teachers who had received inservice education in the concepts and implementation of the Basic Stuff series. This was accomplished through study and use of the Basic Stuff books and the activities included therein. Teachers and students were tested to measure the learning that took place, correlation scores were tabulated between teacher and student knowledge, and congruence between the concepts taught and the concepts learned was evaluated. This study was conducted as a quasi-experimental field study. The design was pre- and post-test with experimental and control groups. From statistical analysis of the data the author concludes: (1) The deliberate use of procedures, activities, and concepts from Basic Stuff resulted in the learning of selected exercise physiology concepts by students of teachers who used these procedures, activities, and concepts. (2) There was no significant correlation of scores on a test of knowledge exercise physiology between teachers and students, either on the pre-test or post-test. (3) There was congruence between the concepts teachers recorded as having taught and the concepts students learned. (4) The interaction of the variables sex, group and level resulted in a significant change in post-test scores. (5) The group which received instruction in the concepts covered in Basic Stuff achieved significantly higher results in knowledge of exercise physiology from the group that continued to receive their normal instruction, controlling for prior knowledge, grade level, sex of student, grade point average, teacher post-test score, teacher education, and minutes of class time.
