Professional Development Schools
Financial Aid and Student Employment
This course is designed to introduce and develop secondary school teacher candidates' ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate standards-based instruction.
Students begin by gaining foundational knowledge of curriculum, instructional planning, learning standards and assessment. They also begin developing lesson plans and unit plans. Students then move to developing more advanced knowledge, skills, and dispositions used in effective teaching. The instructional process in C&I 216 blends research based coursework, simulated teaching experiences, and comprehensive clinical field experiences at University High School. During this phase students develop, through guided performances and reflective activities, knowledge, skills, and dispositions regarding effective instructional models, positive classroom management, classroom diversity, instructional technology, and learning assessment.
Through this course, teacher candidates develop the knowledge, skill, and disposition to enter into teaching situations prepared to advance student learning. In addition, this course allows teacher candidates to build a foundation of knowledge and skill to proceed to specialized instructional methods courses in their subject area. Finally, this course is a critical knowledge and skill-building step in the teacher candidate’s progress toward student teaching and career entry with Illinois teacher certification. Furthermore, by focusing on all students, especially those on the margins, and by stressing both the intellectual and moral virtues, this course fosters development of the institutional standards for teacher education – Realizing the Democratic Ideal.
