C&I 289.75 - Instructional, Assessment and Literacry Practices in Secondary Education

Course Description:

C&I 289.75 is a temporary course number and title that is being used for an integrated approach to C&I 214 and 216 as part of the Secondary Education Teacher Ed sequence leading to 6-12 or K-12 certification (other than Special Ed). This 6 credit course will introduce and develop your ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate standards-based instruction as a secondary teacher candidate.  In addition, in an integrated manner, it will address the materials, strategies, and lesson planning that support literacy in all content areas. This course fosters the moral and intellectual virtues reflected in Realizing the Democratic Ideal.  Students demonstrate and apply knowledge concerning the appreciation of the diversity among learners and that consideration of appropriate teaching strategies.

Course Overview:

This course will focus on planning, teaching and evaluating.  You will first study how to convert broad goals into realistic and attainable instructional objectives.  Then you will learn how to plan instruction aligned with Illinois Learning Standards and subject area national learning standards.  In addition, you will learn about and how to use a variety of instructional procedures, materials and technologies, gaining knowledge and experience with inclusive instructional settings and diverse students groups. You will also learn classroom management strategies and methods of assessment and evaluation. 

As a pre-service teacher/intern, you will learn how to plan and execute text-based lessons for the diverse population of students in accordance with Illinois Standards analyzing diverse literacy needs, including a variety of learning styles, different language backgrounds, and special learning needs.  You will gain an understanding of the process of reading and demonstrate instructional strategies to teach reading in your specific content areas.  In addition to text based literacy, students gain insight and skill in developing secondary school students’ speaking, writing, and listening skills in a variety of contexts using a variety of processes. A caveat for this course often repeated by your instructor is “All teachers are reading teachers, and all teachers are writing teachers”.

You will build your knowledge, skills and dispositions through academic study and develop professional skill in planning, teaching, and evaluation, first in microteaching situations with your class peers and then in actual classroom settings at University High School and/or other school settings.  This semester will be the most challenging, exciting, and practical class/ clinical experience of your pre-student teaching sequence.

Rationale:

The classroom of the 21st century has students with widely diverse learning and literacy needs, including a variety of learning styles, different language backgrounds, and exceptionalities.This course is designed to introduce and develop your ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate standards-based instruction and to develop the knowledge, skill, and disposition to enter into teaching situations.  In addition, this course allows all our teacher candidates to build a foundation of knowledge and skill to proceed to specialized instructional methods courses in their subject area.  Finally, this course is a critical knowledge and skill-building step your progress toward student teaching and career entry with Illinois teacher certification. Furthermore, by focusing on all students, especially those on the margins, and by stressing both the intellectual and moral virtues, this course fosters development of the institutional standards for teacher education – Realizing the Democratic Ideal.

Prerequisites:

Requires Admission to Professional Studies; completion of 45 hrs before enrolling, and earning a C or better in ENG 101, COM 110 and C&I 212.
