Greetings from the Chair

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Illinois State University. With more than 1,800 students enrolled in teacher preparation, the Department of Curriculum and Instruction is one of the largest programs of teacher education in the nation. Although we are large, we take great pride in providing personal attention to students as we prepare them to take their place as teacher leaders in the nation’s schools as is evident in our mission statement. All programs in the department are fully accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Illinois State Board of Education. We also hold membership in the Holmes Partnership.

Founded in 1857, Illinois State was the first public university in Illinois and was dedicated to preparing the state’s teachers. The University has retained its heritage as the state’s leader in all facets of teacher education. Our programs are guided by our belief in the role education plays in the realization of the democratic ideal for our schools and our nation. We are dedicated to taking up the burden of improving the moral and intellectual quality of our societal dialogue by including in it as many educated voices as possible. This dedication unites caring and knowing and is the reason our graduates aspire to teach everyone, especially those in the margins; those who have been or are in danger of being excluded from our social discourse.

The Department includes an important blend of faculty who are recognized for their high quality research and publications as well as being well-grounded in experiences as classroom teachers and school administrators.
