Meeting Minutes for Fall 07/Spring 08

  • Minutes from August 29th

  •           The meeting began with introductions of the board members:

  •        Madison Cacioppo – President

  •        Katie Harl – Vice-President

  •        Ashlee Halvachs – Secretary

  •        Jackie Helbig – Treasurer

  •        Mary Beth Tourdot – Public Relations

  •          Attendance

  •          Mary Beth discussed recruiting:

  •        There will be flyers in the Teacher Education Office (DeGarmo 56). It would be great if members could come by and pick some up to pass out around campus. We would like to recruit more members to join the organization.

  •          Katie went through the CMLA website (www.coe.ilstu.edu/cmla).

  •          Other helpful websites

  •          Madison discussed dues and volunteer hours:

  •          Dues will be $25 for the semester or $40 for the year. These dues also gain you a membership to the National Middle School Association. The dues will go toward events and other things we do throughout the semester.

  •          Volunteer Hours:

  •        We would like all members to volunteer 3 – 5 hours throughout the year. These can be done at our fundraisers and other events.

  •          In our next meeting, we will be discussing fundraising for the organization. If anyone has any ideas, please bring them to the next meeting.

  •          Katie gave some ideas that she had for the semester:

  •        A Bar Crawl fundraiser

  •        A 5th or 8th grade bowling night at the BBC.

  •          Madison discussed the types of speakers that we will have throughout the year.

  • Lastly, we discussed a little bit about the NMSA Conference in Houston, TX in November. This is a huge benefit to us to go the conference and we would like as many people to go as possible. If you would like more information about the conference please contact one of the board members.

  •          Jackie passed out a sign-up sheet for anyone willing to bake, sit at the table, or buy ingredients.

  •           Dr. Hatch gave a presentation on Starting the School Year Off

  • American Education Week in November

  •  Ideas for something we can do for others as a group:

  • Thank yous for the student teachers

  • Baskets for the middle school teachers lounges

  •  Meeting on November 14th will be in the Bone Center: we will be seeing the speaker, Jonathon Kozol at 7pm. The topic is” “Letters to a Young Teacher”. For more on the event, visit: http://www.ilstu.edu/home/anniversary/kozol.shtml

  • We will meet outside McAllister’s at 6:45pm.

  •  If anyone is interested in speaking to the people who do the telefund about Middle Level Education, let Madison know.

  • Homecoming – October 13

  •  If anyone is interested in building a float or walking in the homecoming parade, let Madison know.

  • Presentation at Tri-Valley Middle School

  • Dr. Angus Meyo will be speaking on the Gifted Adolescent

  • October 3rd 6-8pm in the cafeteria of Tri-Valley

  • October is the Month of the Adolescent

  • This when we would like to do the bowling social for middle schoolers at the BBC.

  • Possibly 6-8 graders at one middle school

  •  It would be about $8 per child for 2 hours of bowling, shoes, and pizza.

  • 5-7pm on either October 20th or 27th

  • Jackie figured that if we had 60 kids come, we would make around $200.

  •  Sweatshirts (Ashlee):

  • We finalized the sweatshirt plans

  •  Black with a CMLA design on front; on back a quote inside of a chalk box.

  • Quote: While we try to teach our students all about life, our students teach us what life is all about.

  • Cost: $30

  •  If anyone is interested in one, who hasn’t already signed up, please email Ashlee.

  • After announcements, we did some activities to get to know each other

  • We broke up into our endorsements and played 2 truths and a lie.

  •  Door Prize: NMSA bags and goodies won by Katie and Megan!!

    o       The meeting began with guest speakers from “Redbirds Taking Strides”. They were asking for support in their campaign to become off-campus senators for the Student Government Association.

    o       Scott Preston and Matt Spileck

    o       Spoke about how they could help RSOs like CMLA if eleceted.

    o       They could get more senators for all of the groups.

    o       Want to get student involvement numbers up.

    o       Revitalize campus safety.

    o       Get more civic engagement with the Town of Normal.

    o       If you are interested in voting for them, you can do so on iCampus April 1-2.

    o       Announcements: If anyone is interested in joining the CMLA Relay for Life team, email Madison Cacioppo at mmcacio@ilstu.edu

    o       Activity: Because registration is coming up we broke up into groups based on endorsements, the Block, and PDS. We discussed with the groups classes that others have taken, classes that people will be taking, professors, etc.
