Announcements
This weekend in Family Weekend. CMLA will have a table set up in DeGarmo on Saturday (10-27-07) for anyone who wants to tour the school and learn about our organization. Our table will be set up from 10:30-12:30; if anyone would like to gain some volunteer hours and promote the group, let one of the board members know!
We had a panel of High School Freshman come talk to us about the transition from 8th grade to High School.
We received our sweatshirts!! Yay! There are still a few who have ordered shirts that haven’t gotten them yet, so just let Ashlee know if you want to pick them up before our next meeting on November 14th.
We then made fabulous thank you cards for our student teachers in appreciation of all that they do!! Good work everyone!
Houston trip is coming soon! Everyone make sure they are registered!

Announcements:
Tonight is the last meeting of the semester. As soon as we know, we will let the group know when the meetings for the Spring 2008 semester are and where they will be held.
Dues: Madison and Jackie go through the list to make sure that all members have paid their dues for the semester.
Sweatshirts: Ashlee goes through the list of ordered sweatshirts to make sure that all have been handed out and paid for.

First Meeting of Spring 2008 Semester!

Introductions of Board Members:

Madison announces to the members that we are in need of a new treasurer for the semester. Our previous treasurer, Jackie, is unable due to her current student teaching (yay Jackie!)
Duties of Treasurer

The voting of the treasurer will take place at the next meeting on February 6, 2008
Dues for the semester will be $25
Interest in Relay for Life?
Registration is $5.00/person; each person is asked to raise $100.00 for a team of 10.
Possible Speakers for the semester: Someone to discuss ESL
There will be a Scavenger Hunt done at a meeting this semester (when there is warmer weather)
T-shirts for Middle Level Majors
We are discussing creating and selling t-shirts for all Middle Level Majors, not just CMLA specific ones for the semester.
Dr. Hatch’s Announcement
The Middle Level Ed department is in search of a new Faculty member. There are currently three candidates. Two of these candidates are from out of the area and the department would like Middle Level majors to give them a tour of the campus. If anyone is interested in doing so, let Dr. Hatch know. The first one is on February 14th, and the second on February 21st. Please see Dr. Hatch for the times.

Announcements:
Middle Level Education T-shirts: Dr. Hatch had the artwork done. We will be getting order forms from him to pass around for the shirts.
CMLA Shirts: Is anyone interested in getting shirts just for CMLA? We talked about maybe getting shirts, long sleeve shirts, or sweatpants. If anyone is interested, let someone on the board know.
We have a new board member!! Katie Smulski will be our new Treasurer. Yay!
Relay for Life:
CMLA will be putting together a Relay for Life team. It will be held on the Quad on April from 6pm to 6am. Each member’s registration fee will be $5.00 and will be paid for by CMLA.
For a 10 person team, we will be asked to raise $1,000. We will be getting some money from a sponsor, but we would like to raise the other together as a group. If anyone has any ideas on how to do that, let one of the board members know.

Minutes from March 5, 2008
o Door Prizes were handed out.
o We had a guest speaker come to talk to us about teaching ESL students.
o ELL Teacher: Patti Jensen (District 87)
o She talked about getting an ELL endorsement at ISU. It is done through the English dept. She said that it looks very good on your resume and would most likely get you hired in a school, even if you have it partially completed.
o She told us some ESL terms:
o TPI
o TBE – Transitional Bilingual Program
o BICS – Basic Interpersonal Communication (takes about 6mo. – 2 yrs. to acquire)
o CAPS – Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (takes 6 – 8 yrs. to acquire)
o The most important thing is: KNOW YOUR LEARNERS!

o The meeting began with guest speakers from “Redbirds Taking Strides”. They were asking for support in their campaign to become off-campus senators for the Student Government Association.
o Scott Preston and Matt Spileck
o Spoke about how they could help RSOs like CMLA if eleceted.
o They could get more senators for all of the groups.
o Want to get student involvement numbers up.
o Revitalize campus safety.
o Get more civic engagement with the Town of Normal.
o If you are interested in voting for them, you can do so on iCampus April 1-2.

o Activity: Because registration is coming up we broke up into groups based on endorsements, the Block, and PDS. We discussed with the groups classes that others have taken, classes that people will be taking, professors, etc.

Madison discussed the 2008 NMSA Conference in Denver, Colorado
October 30 – November 1
Registration Fee for the conference is $70
Topics: Special Education, Technology, Assessments, Classroom Management, and the core subject areas.
