The College of Education includes academic programs and service areas organized into the departments of Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, Educational Administration and Foundations, the University Laboratory Schools, and the Cecilia J. Lauby Teacher Education Center.
The Office of the Dean provides support for administrative, curricular, technology, communications, and fiscal functions of the college. Under the leadership of Dean Deborah Curtis, the office serves undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, and departments and units associated with the College.
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction prepares teacher candidates for initial teaching positions in the areas of early childhood, elementary, middle level and bilingual education. The department offers nationally acclaimed master's and doctorate programs in education as well as an alternative route to secondary teacher certification non-degree program.
The Educational Administration and Foundations Department prepares people of diverse backgrounds for leadership roles in education through our master's and doctoral programs in Educational Administration on campus and in off-campus sites such as Chicago, Springfield, the Quad Cities, and Peoria.
Illinois State University is the first choice for special education in Illinois and the leading teacher preparation program in the state. The undergraduate program allows specialization in deaf and hard of hearing, low vision and blindness, and learning and behavior. Individualized master's and doctoral programs as well as graduate certification are offered based on candidates' educational and professional experience and goals.
The Cecilia J. Lauby Teacher Education Center is a one-stop shopping location designed to assist teacher education majors as they complete their program requirements. Get information on field experience, advice for early childhood education, elementary education, middle level education, and special education, and information and assistance on meeting university-wide teacher education requirements.
The University Laboratory Schools, Thomas Metcalf School and University High School, provide educational opportunities for 1,000 preschool through twelfth grade students. It also provides teacher candidates the opportunity to observe, study, and experience a model school employing excellence in educational theory and practice.
