Outstanding College of Education Service Award

Purpose

The Service Awards exist to honor and recognize full-time, tenure or tenure-line faculty who have demonstrated excellence in service to Illinois State University at any level (department, college, and/or University). By honoring such individuals, the University demonstrates its commitment to service as an activity essential to its mission and to its governance, provides incentive for faculty members to pursue activities that enhance the quality of their service, and emphasizes the importance of outstanding service.

Those faculty members whose service accomplishments are unusually significant and meritorious among their colleagues in the College of Education may be considered for the Outstanding College Service Award. This award, which is bestowed on one faculty individual in any given year, honors Illinois State University's most exceptional leaders in service. The Outstanding College Service Award provides $1,000 either in salary funds and/or in appropriated operating funds to each recipients. Award funds must be expended by the end of the fiscal year in which the award is granted.

Eligibility

To be eligible to compete for Outstanding College Service Award, a faculty member must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty member in the College of Education with at least two years' employment at Illinois State University.
  2. Receive support for his/her candidacy for the Outstanding College Service Award from either his/her department chair or administrator, or member of the University
  3. community who is knowledgeable about the candidate's service contribution.

Faculty members who have received the Outstanding College Service Award within the last five years are ineligible for the award.

Application Procedures

Each candidate must submit a curriculum vita as part of the application. In addition, candidates must document the scope and quality of their service by preparing and submitting a service portfolio. The cover sheet, provided with these guidelines, must form the first page of the portfolio. For the purpose of the award, the complete portfolio, including appendices, is limited to a single, two-inch, three-ring binder (or its equivalent). Portfolios that deviate significantly from this volume of material will not be considered. Information on the preparation of services portfolios may be found in the offices of the Provost, college dean and departments.

At a minimum, the service portfolio must include the following:

  1. A statement of your service philosophy,
  2. A statement of your service responsibilities for the last three years,
  3. A summary statement from your department chair and/or a colleague addressing your service. This statement should include:
    • An evaluation of the candidate's cumulative service contribution to the department, college and university.
    • An evaluation of the candidate's ability to incorporate rigor and challenge into his/her service practices,
  4. Representative service materials from at least two different service settings, at least one within the college or department, and another at the University level.

Additional portfolio elements, though optional, are desirable and may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Honors, awards, or other forms of recognition for excellence in service,
  • Evidence of professional development activities undertaken in regard to service,
  • Statement from members of committees on which the candidate have served and other colleagues who have experienced the candidate's service activities,
  • Evidence of students', colleagues', and/or administrators' achievements as a direct result of the candidate's service,
  • Materials, procedures, or innovations for service,
  • Evidence of activities undertaken to assist colleagues with their service, teaching, or research.
