Web Hosting Management Guidelines

Applications

Each virtual host includes the following features:

  • Domain name consultation and registration
  • Appropriate storage space relative to organizational needs
  • Daily monitoring of the service
  • System backups
  • All core IIS features
  • Select Survey Form Application
  • Search capability via Illinois State Google search engines

Content

The content of sites hosted on the COE Web server must conform to ISU’s Appropriate Use Policy for Electronic Use and Communications as well as the ISU Campus Web Policy. Political and/or commercial content is prohibited. Course content should be placed on COE’s Web server. Content must abide by copyright and fair use guidelines. Sensitive information (example, University ID’s, grades, movies, music, pornography) shall not be stored on the server, nor shall any illegal content.

Accessibility/Adherence to Standards

Web content must adhere to federal (Section 508) accessibility guidelines. Additionally, the coding of the content should comply with current Internet standards (W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). The W3C and Bobby Online Free Portal are tools to test accessibility and standards compliance.

Support/Development/Design/Testing

The COE Technology Team (COETT) only provides support of the server and related applications for services. Server and application support requires regular maintenance and will consequently require scheduled maintenance down time. All scheduled downtime will be reported to both the primary and secondary (if provided) contacts of the organizations hosting their sites on the COE Web server.

In general, the COETT does not offer development, design or testing services for Web hosting. A development environment will be provided on the COE Test Web Server if requested. Web site owners are required to develop and test their site before securely transferring content to the Web server. Additionally, processes should be developed to approve content before publishing to the production Web site.

Accounts/Passwords

All user rights and permissions to the COE servers will be granted based on the users ULID. Individuals must have a ULID in order to gain access to any COE server. To that end, ISU’s Appropriate Use policy must be adhered to. Groups can be utilized to give multiple persons appropriate access to shared sites/files.

Disk Utilization

Each Web site on the virtual Web server is given a soft quota to be dictated by the COETT. Users and organizations should not utilize the Web server for general file storage. Storing personal documents (including media files) is strictly prohibited.

Content backup and retrieval

Each organization is responsible for backing up their data/content and should maintain a current copy of all content locally. Although the COETT does create periodic system backups, COETT is not responsible for site content other than in the case of catastrophic loss of the system. Requests to restore individual files will be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Software Installation

Users shall not install any software (Web or database) nor make any modifications to previously installed software without prior COETT approval. Applications or modifications that utilize a specific port will generally not be allowed.

Electronic Mail

The central Web server will not accept or relay mail (i.e. listen on port 25 for SMTP connections) in order to prevent spam. If e-mail is required from your site, please work with the COETT to find the best solution.

Support team access and monitoring

It may be necessary for COETT to examine system logs and other records to resolve system problems. COETT reserves the right to access any account's directories to investigate and/or resolve system problems. The organization's Webmaster will be notified if changes are required.

In addition, COETT will cooperate with Information Security and/or legal authorities in investigating claims of illegal activity including, but not limited to, illegal transfer or use of copyrighted material, postings, or other illegal activity.
