Students are introduced to database development in an educational context by first formulating a purpose statement that is intended to address a particular educational need. They then determine what data are required, and create a properly formatted table that will contain the textual, numeric, date/time, and/or monetary information needed to address the stated purpose. Students develop a form to more easily interact with the data and learn how to efficiently search, sort, and filter the information they have gathered. Finally, several queries are devised that will answer one or more questions pertaining to the stated purpose of the database, and reports are generated that will present the results of these queries in an easy-to-read format. No previous database experience is assumed.

The powerful computational, graphical, and organizational aspects of spreadsheets are highlighted in this introductory workshop. To help illustrate these useful features, students construct a spreadsheet-based reading list using both traditional and form-based data entry methods. They then learn how to perform searches, simple and complex sorts, and filtering on the data they have inputted. In the process of learning how to perform calculations using formulas and functions, participants are introduced to the concepts of relative and absolute addressing. The workshop concludes with a graphing exercise where students use the chart wizard to create graphs that will enable them to discern patterns from their data and draw useful conclusions.
