The Illinois & Michigan Canal was important in the past as a transportation corridor. The building of the canal fueled the growth of northeastern Illinois towns, increased the market for Illinois farm products, and helped establish Chicago as a trading and transportation hub. The following lessons are provided as teacher resources on the Illinois & Michigan Canal that can be used in grades 4 -10. By familiarizing yourself with the lessons, maps, and photographs, you will gain a greater understanding of the Illinois & Michigan Canal that you can, in turn, share with your students.
