As a cultural geographer, you have been studying a primitive tribe living deep in a tropical rainforest. You have learned much about their way of life, which hasn’t changed in hundreds, even thousands of years. They have been living totally isolated from the outside world.

Their isolation may end soon because the government is building roads in the rainforest, very near where the tribe lives. If this road building project continues, it is likely that the members of the tribe will eventually be coming into contact with settlers who are moving out from the crowded cities.

The government has asked you to advise them regarding whether it should continue with the road building project. They want to know what the consequences will be when the tribe members come into contact with the settlers. What are the advantages and disadvantages of such contact?

Write a letter to the Secretary of the Department of the Interior responding to the government’s questions and concerns.
