Presidential Library and Museum announces teacher workshops for the 2007-2008 school year

Workshop Information Available Online

SPRINGFIELD – Good teachers help students learn.  Great teachers inspire students to learn even more.  The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum’s 2007-2008 Teacher Workshops are designed for great teachers.

The workshops are designed for educators in most subjects and in all grade levels, and provide teachers with strong content-based programs on topics such as Lincoln, the Civil War, African-American History and Illinois History to name a few.  These intense "history lessons" assist educators in developing a solid background on unfamiliar topics or in mastering a discipline they already know and love.  In addition, the Education Department's hands-on classroom application programs will provide ideas and methods for teaching historical content across the curriculum using digital resources, primary documents and material culture.

All workshops are held at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, are free of charge and offer CPDUs to certified teachers.  They are developed and hosted by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum’s Education Department.  Educators may visit the website at www.alplm.org for workshop descriptions and additional teacher resources. Contact Carol Manning at carol.manning@illinois.gov with questions or to register for a workshop.

GPS and GIS have arrived at Illinois schools!
Its time to prepare your students for the future!

It is just a matter of time before these technology tools are commonplace with students across the state.

We are a group of Illinois educators, teaching other educators and students how to use these cutting edge tools. Visit our web site (www.gis2gps.com). We have developed a total program to address different approaches to these tools.

GPS - Global Positioning Systems - provides students with a powerful technology tool for exploring everything from the world to their backyard. By collecting GPS data, students will be able to learn to investigate the world around them.

GIS - Geographical Information Systems - engages students in active hands-on learning, fosters critical thinking, involves students in investigations of relevant real-issues, employs problem based learning, advance technology literacy, and goals of the educational community.

Three different classes have been prepared and are being offered on your site. They are:

GPS2GIS Adventure - This course will provide 3rd – 12th grade educators with information about GIS and GPS technologies, why these are important in education, and ways of implementing these technologies into the school curriculum.

Have GPS Will Travel - Experience the ultimate GPS hands-on workshop for educators. This class is a hands-on introductory level class to GPS units. This class is an introductory level class for all 3rd  - 12th grade educators who wish to learn what GPS is and how to use it as a tool with their students in the classroom.

Fundamentals of GIS – this class is a full circle approach to GIS and is designed for all 3rd – 12th grade educators. It is particularly for those who wish to learn how to use GIS and its related resources with their students in the classroom.

Contact us and set a date for your 2008 Experience. Classes are also taught on site across Illinois and Wisconsin. We offer CPDU’s or college graduate workshop credit for each of our classes.

More information about these classes and technologies can be found at our site:
http://www.gis2gps.com – Once there, click on “Classes”.

At the bottom of each class we have a flyer that tells you more about each class. We would also be happy to send out this information. Just drop us a request.

I am very happy to announce the upcoming summer institutes on the

> history and geography of Minnesota's Iron Range. This is a

> collaborative effort between the Minnesota Humanities Center and the

> Minnesota Alliance for Geographic Education. Please consider promoting

> this opportunity among your teacher network. The Institute will be a

> great week of geography and history.  Several geographers will give

> presentations and two MAGE Master Teachers will demonstrate curriculum

> materials and assist participants in the development of their new

> course materials.  The Iron Range and Duluth are not only interesting

> they are beautiful this time of year.  Because of a generous grant

> from the National Endowment for the Humanities teachers from around

> the country will be able to attend at no cost. It will geography teachers a wonderful opportunity to learn from colleagues working in very different settings.

> BUILDING AMERICA: MINNESOTA'S IRON RANGE, U.S. INDUSTRIALIZATION, AND

> THE CREATION OF A WORLD POWER /A LANDMARKS OF AMERICAN HISTORY

> WORKSHOP/

> *Sunday-Friday

> June 22-27, 2008 OR July 27-Aug. 1, 2008

>

> The geography of Minnesota's Iron Range, its contributions, and its

> people is rarely, if ever, told. It is absent from general treatments

> of American history, absent from examinations of industrial America,

> and absent from studies of the U.S. military build-ups in the first

> and second world wars; the Iron Range appears as only a footnote in

> historical treatments of the American steel industry.

> The history of the people who came to work these mines is the history

> of America; it is the story of immigrants, of conflict and

> assimilation, of people creating lives for themselves, their families,

> and for others.

Offered twice in Summer 2008 by the Minnesota Humanities Center with

> support from the Minnesota Alliance for Geographic Education , this week-long workshop will focus on the history

> and activities that took place on the Vermilion and the Mesabi Iron

> Ranges. Participants will be provided with resources and new content

> knowledge for introducing the history and geography of Minnesota's

> Iron Range region, its contributions, and its people into their

> current American history and geography curriculum.
