Counselor’s Award

The purpose of the Counselor’s Award is to encourage members to conduct their own educational projects or research and to share their results with other professionals in education. The Award is made at the Spring induction ceremony and has an undergraduate and a graduate category. Competition for the award is limited to active members of Mu Chapter and the award at each level includes a certificate of accomplishment, appropriate publicity, and a check for $250.

The project or research may be part of a larger research effort such as a Master’s thesis or a doctoral dissertation, or it may be a purely independent effort. Examples of topics for projects or research would include, but are certainly not limited to:

  1. how an educational experience, such as tutoring, mentoring or involvement in a reading program, is enhancing your abilities as an educator;
  2. strategies for coping with students who have learning disabilities or who are abused, or who experiencing peer pressure;
  3. how students use attributions (blaming the situation or themselves) to explain why they have been victimized and strategies for helping them recognize and overcome this problem;
  4. how specific teaching styles can be linked to specific classroom situations to facilitate learning.

To apply for this award which, for this year is made in honor of Dr. Franklin G. Lewis, Counselor of Mu Chapter from 1975-1995, submit a letter/proposal in which you explain:

  1. Who you are and when you inducted into Mu Chapter;
  2. What hypothesis will be or was tested or, if the research is not experimental, what will be or is the
  3. identifiable product;
  4. Where the project or research will be conducted;
  5. Why you believe the project or research is needed and how the results may help you improve your practices (see Applicability); and
  6. How you intend to conduct, or have conducted, your project or research i.e., a brief explanation of methodology and time frame, including the date for submitting the final report.

Guidelines that will be used to evaluate the submissions include:

  1. Applicability – the extent to which other educators can make practical use of what you have done or found.
  2. Length - the letter/proposal may be no longer than five, double-spaced pages.
  3. Writing - use of proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and headings.

Applications for the Counselor's Award should be addressed to: Adel T. AL-Bataineh, Ed.D., Associate Counselor, Dept. of Curriculum and Instruction-5330, Illinois State University, Normal, IL  61790-5330. Applications must be received by the last day of March.

You will be notified about the status of your submission first when it is received and then when all submissions have been judged by the Scholarship Committee.
