How does the theme "it starts with education" relate to you?

I think that "it starts with education" is part of my life every day as I work with future teachers; I still experience it and I try to help them see the incredible responsibility and opportunity they have with students.

Was there a particular event or experience that made you decide to pursue the field of education?

I always knew I wanted to be a special educator. When I was at ISU, I was even more sure that I was on the right path because I loved all my classroom experience. I was also involved with faculty in research and that started my desire to be a lifelong learner and pursue an advanced degree.

Was there a particular faculty member or class that helped shape your thinking on the role of educators?

Dr. Lanny Morreau was an incredible influence. I had the opportunity to work with him on research and attend conferences. Most importantly, he made me believe that I could do anything I wanted to. He also challenged my thinking about expectations and beliefs about people with disabilities. All of the courses in my major prepared me for teaching and the classroom experience was really valuable.
