When Bill Cosby came to Illinois Statue University April 26, 2003 for two performances, he had one special request — to meet the dean of the College of Education. Dean Dianne Ashby and her husband Jack gladly granted this wish, meeting with Mr. Cosby back stage between performances. He was impressed with ISU's mission in teacher education and the success of ISU candidates on state certification exams.
Bill Cosby dropped out of high school and joined the United States Navy. In the Navy he completed his GED. Upon discharge he enrolled in college to become a physical education teacher. Later in life Mr. Cosby earned a doctorate in education.
