(September 25, 2006) The Third Annual Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Symposium was held in the Bone Student Center on September 14-15, 2006. The Autism Spectrum Symposium was a collaborative effort between the Autism Spectrum Institute at Illinois State University (ISU), Department of Special Education at ISU, Autism Society of McLean County, Student Council for Exceptional Children, Autism Society of Illinois, Easter Seals, Illinois Autism/PDD Training and Technical Assistance Project, Livingston County Special Services, Mackinaw Valley Special Education and STARNET Regions I and III.
The two-day event attracted over 125 parents and professionals, from Illinois and surrounding states, providing them with information related to best practices for working with and supporting individuals with ASD.
Highlights of the Symposium included keynote Mr. Gerald Newport, a 58 year-old male savant with Asperger Syndrome, and keynote Dr. Paula Kluth, author of "You're Going to Love This Kid!" Educating Students with Autism in Inclusive Classrooms. The dates of the Fourth Annual ASD have been tentatively set for September 13 and 14, 2007.
