Curriculum and Instruction faculty and staff accomplishments

(August 2, 2007) The last few months have been productive ones for the faculty and staff of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Accomplishments include successful completion of grant-funded projects, acquisition of awards for new projects, and election to serve a on a national board.

Bataineh and Torres' program helped 21 bilingual paraprofessionals earn teaching certificates

The "Transition to Teaching Program," funded by a $1.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education in 2002, provided paraprofessionals in Waukegan, Illinois the opportunity to earn certification in Teacher Education with an endorsement in Bilingual Education. Adel Bataineh and George Torres directed the project. As of May 2007, twenty-one students earned a B.S. in Elementary Education with a Bilingual endorsement. The project ends in September, 2007.

Morey co-principal investigator on 3-$1 million awards to increase math and science achievement

The Center for Math, Science, and Technology (CeMAST) recently announced that the Illinois State Board of Education, via the Department of Education, awarded three Math-Science Partnership grants to ISU faculty. Marilyn Morey (Middle Level, C&I) is a co-principal investigator on each of the awards. The awards are a part of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Partnerships (IMSP) program designed to increase the classroom achievement of students in math and science by enhancing content knowledge and the professional skills of their teachers. Each award is approximately $1 million over a three-year period.

Bataineh awarded $1.5 million to train 75 bilingual teachers

Adel Bataineh (Secondary, C&I) was awarded approximately $1.5 million grant award over a four year period from the U.S. Department of Education for the Bilingual Paraprofessionals in Transition (BPT) project. The purpose of the project is to provide training to 75 bilingual paraprofessionals (English/Spanish) who desire to earn a B.S. degree in Elementary Education and certification with Bilingual Approval or endorsement.

Smith elected to national professional board

Beatrice Smith (Literacy, C&I) was recently elected to the Nominating Committee of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

20 Korean science teachers attended ISU professional development program led by Park and Powell

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction hosted 20 Korean primary and secondary science teachers for a short-term professional development program for four-weeks. The program was sponsored by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. It was planned and organized by Do-Yong Park (Science Education, C&I) and Adrian Powell. The purpose of the program was to improve the quality of science-mathematic teaching and learning in primary and secondary schools.
