(June 26, 2007) That certainly was the case in 1857, when Illinois State Normal University first opened its classrooms to students who aspired to be teachers. Today, Illinois State's College of Education—which enrolls about 5,000 students in 37 accredited teacher education programs across five colleges—is recognized nationally as one of the top 10 producers of teachers among American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education institutions. Nearly one of every eight teachers in Illinois public school classrooms holds a degree from Illinois State.
But the College of Education is about much more than numbers. Its core values are reflected in "Realizing the Democratic Ideal," a conceptual framework that guides all teacher-education programs. "Realizing the Democratic Ideal" states that the University has an "enduring commitment to educate teachers who will be responsible to the moral and intellectual demands a democratic society places on them."
