Michie named ACEI 2009 conference keynote speaker

(January 21, 2009) Greg Michie, assistant professor of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education, will be the keynote speaker of the 2009 Annual International Conference & Exhibition sponsored by the Association of Childhood Education International (ACEI).

The conference, which will be held at the Westin Michigan Avenue in Chicago, IL, runs from March 18 through March 21. Michie will make his keynote address at the opening welcome session which is scheduled for the 18th at 5:15 p.m.

Michie's work has focused on a process designed to improve student learning in every school environment, especially those with more diverse populations. Michie emphasizes the importance of teachers getting to know their students, their school's surrounding community, and their students' cultural background.

Michie spends most of his time in Chicago's Little Village, a predominantly Hispanic area of the city where he has helped Illinois State develop another branch of its Professional Development School (PDS) program. The Little Village PDS partnership is part of a larger initiative, the Chicago Teacher Pipeline, with the intention of recruiting ISU students, training them as professional educators, and placing them back in the community schools.

Before coming to Illinois State, Michie taught for nine years in Chicago Public Schools. During his time in the Chicago Public School system he developed a media literacy course and a student video-production program. Michie also spent three years acting as co-director of an alternative certification program for urban teachers.
