The Bowman Fellows

The Bowman Fellows is a prestigious fellowship that was established in 2004–2005 in honor of Dr. Al Bowman, the current president of Illinois State University. This is the fourth year for the program. The Bowman Fellows are education majors committed to being visionary leaders on campus, in their communities, and in their future roles in schools. The core values of the program include: visionary leadership, learning-centered education, organizational and personal learning, valuing faculty, staff, and partners, and a focus on the future.

The benefits of being a fellow include opportunities for professional development through regular seminars held each semester, unique social activities, and opportunities to work directly with local schools. Fellows also receive a $500 stipend per semester, an honor stole and program notice at graduation, and letters of recommendation for their resume file as well as a group meeting with President Bowman each semester.

To qualify for the fellowship, students must:

  • be from a traditionally underrepresented ethnic/racial group
  • be a sophomore or junior
  • major in the College of Education (Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or Middle Level Education)
  • have a minimum 2.75 GPA
